A Taste of the South: Disneyland's Mint Julep Bar and Recipe

Tucked away in a sleepy little corner of Disneyland's New Orleans Square, The Mint Julep Bar welcomes guests to sample favorite flavors of the Big Easy.  From Funnel Cake to Beignets, this window-service eatery has got your southern-loving sweet tooth covered.

If you're like me, on your first stroll through New Orleans Square, you'll immediately notice guests strolling by with refreshing-looking green liquid concoctions.  From that moment on, you'll
begin searching high and low to find the source of the vibrant beverage!  Your scavenge will lead you to the aforementioned Mint Julep Bar...and the drink we are speaking of is none other than Disneyland's Mint Julep.

Now being a southern girl, I am no stranger to the minty goodness of a Julep, but these are a little different than the traditional beverage which usually contains alcohol.  The best way I can describe Disneyland's version is "a sweet, mint-flavored lemonade."

After querying a few die-hard Disney fans, I have found that opinions on this popular beverage are mixed across the table.  Some absolutely refuse to step foot on Disneyland property without stopping at the Mint Julep Bar.  Others say they taste like glorified mouthwash.  What do you think?  If you haven't had the chance to sip on one of Disney's most famous drinks, fear not...I have supplied the recipe here as you can receive it by asking at City Hall before leaving the park.  Don't forget to check out my review of nearby Cafe Orleans while you're here!

Ingredients:

1 lb. granulated sugar
6 c. water
1 1/4 oz. lime juice concentrate
8 1/2 oz. lemonade concentrate
3/4 c. Creme de Menthe Syrup (Coffee Syrup not Liqueur)

Garnishes:

Mint Leaves
Lime Slice
Maraschino Cherry

 Directions:
  1. Combine the sugar and water in a 3 quart saucepan. Stir the contents until the sugar is dissolved.
  2. Stir in lime and lemonade concentrate next. Continue stirring and bring to boil just below the boiling point. DO NOT BOIL!
  3. Remove pan from heat and chill. Once chilled, add a ratio of 1 part syrup to 5 parts chilled water.
  4. Transfer beverage to pitcher and enjoy!
  5. Garnish each serving with mint leaves, lime slice and a maraschino cherry
Special Thanks goes out to Days in the Park for capturing the Mint Julep Bar pictures for me!
